Just when it feels like you’ll always be at odds with your preteens and teens, they pleasantly surprise you.
This morning was a day off from school for my children. Unfortunately, it was a regular Friday work day for me. With coffee in hand and ready to walk out the door, I realized my nearly 13-year-old son Sam was still sleeping. I didn’t want to wake him up, but I knew he would be disappointed if I just up and left. So I decided to tape a “good morning” note to his door.
I called home around noon to make sure everything was going smoothly. Sam answered and immediately told me that he was busy cleaning. “Cleaning?” I asked. For a moment I thought I had misdialed. (Who is this angel to which I am speaking?!) He told me he was putting away dishes and straightening up the family room. Suspiciously, I thanked him.
When I came home from work, the house was clean: no dirty dishes in the sink or on the counter and the pillows perfectly placed on the couch. As I continued to my bedroom, this note was taped to my door:
I know tomorrow is a new day and very well may bring our typical parent/child arguments, but for now I will bask in the glow of this sweet mommy moment. Ah……
